Shopify webhook reliability.

I implemented a queue-backed webhook processor that normalizes Shopify events, retries failures safely, and keeps downstream inventory systems in sync.

The Problem

Shopify webhooks arrived in bursts. Transient API errors caused duplicate writes and silent drift between storefront inventory and the warehouse system.

Approach

• Persisted raw payloads first, then processed asynchronously with explicit job states.
• Used exponential backoff and a dead-letter queue for payloads that failed validation.
• Mapped Shopify variants to internal SKUs in a single normalization step shared by all consumers.

Results

• Retry storms stopped causing duplicate stock adjustments
• Operators could inspect failed jobs without reading application logs
• Onboarding a new storefront followed a documented checklist instead of bespoke scripts
